About the Item

Large bronze sculpture signed Vittorio Tavernari, female figure. Vittorio Tavernari He was born in Milan in 1919. His father, Giovanni, is a painter and restorer. He begins his apprenticeship at Francesco Wildt's atelier where he makes friends with Cassinari, Milani, Cappello and Dal Forno. Friend of Morlotti, they share a small studio in Como, frequenting the group of "Abstractionists". In 1945 he was one of the founding artists and critics of the magazine "Numero" and one of the founders of the manifesto "Oltre Guernica". His first personal exhibitions are in Milan at the Galleria del Camino (1948) and at the Galleria del Milione (1951) where he presents his first figurative works. After the abstract period (1948 - 1952), he resumes sculpting the "Maternity" to which are added the "Pietà" and the cycle of thread-like sculptures. In 1959 begins the cycle of "Torsos" which have as their theme the female figure and in 1962 the "Torsos of Christ". In 1961 his first solo show in Paris. In 1964, after other participations, he has a personal room at the XXXII Venice Biennale, while in 1967 Carlo Ludovico Ragghianti records the graphic production consisting of 750 drawings, tempera, sketches. In 1968 the cycle of the "Heavens" begins and the following year that of the "Lovers". In 1973 the prestigious anthology at the Rodin Museum in Paris and, in the following years, other personal exhibitions in Varese, Rimini, Prato, Chiasso, Turin, Lucca at the Centro Ragghianti. Numerous participations in collective exhibitions throughout Europe and in many non-European countries. His sculptures are present in important museums in Italy (Milan, Bologna, Rome, Palermo, Matera, Vatican City) and abroad (São Paulo in Brazil, New York, Bellinzona). He died in Varese in 1987.
