Ceramic Plate with Abstract Glaze Wall Sculpture by Jun Kaneko

About the Item

A large ceramic plate as a wall hanging sculpture by Jun Kaneko (1942-) made in 1990. The Japanese-born American ceramic artist, based in Omaha, Nebraska is known for crating ceramic sculpture with abstract and expressive glaze pattern. Many of his large ceramic installation can be found in public spaces and museums around US and the world. The artist created a series of wall -hanging plates such as this and also slabs, and each is covered with abstract glaze. He favors the large oval plate as one of his sculptural formats, which serves as a canvas to create an interplay of abstract imagery on a three-dimensional surface. The one on offer features two large grey dots with slightly metallic borders on a high glossy black background. The Zen ambience it carries is mysterious and meditative, open for interpretation by the viewer. The piece is signed and dated "Kaneko '90," verso with wire hanger. Jun Kaneko's pieces are in the collection of Hawaii State Art Museum, the Honolulu Museum of Art, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Museum of Arts and Design (New York City), the Museum of Nebraska Art, the Sheldon Museum of Art, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Scripps College, the Shigaraki Ceramics Museum (Shigaraki, Japan), and the Smithsonian American Art Museum. Kaneko has realized over twenty-five public art commissions around the world. He has been honored with national, state and organization fellowships and an honorary doctorate from the Royal College of Art in London.
