About the Item

These wooden sculpture are chainsaw carved by David Melrose and are made from a solid log of black walnut. "Still Life Vessels” are a series of one of a kind sculptures inspired by both the still lives of Giorgio Morandi and sculptural works of Georg Baselitz. A take on the classic still life paintings of wine bottles made by Morandi but with the modern water bottle as an inspiration. Each vessel is also carved by chain saw only in a rustic style akin to Baselitz. Each facet of the bottle shows the tooth of the blade that gives a "painterly gesture but in three dimensions" to each surface. We use all natural Milk Paint to add a little light with color (white and yellow) to some surfaces adding additional contrast and life to each piece. These sculptures were meant be be shown in groupings of two or more like a traditional still life form but each vessel is strong enough to stand alone as well. Each Vessel is unique. They are made from solid walnut logs that fell during Hurricane Sandy in 2012 at the creators family farm house in western New Jersey. The wood seasoned for over 10 years prior to carving. David Melrose is a trained artist turned designer and co-founder of Studio Melrose. This and all works produced by David Melrose are made at Studio Melrose in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.
