About the Item

A beautiful, wonderfully executed and designed Shona stone sculpture by renowned African/ Zimbabwean sculptor/artist Damian Manuhwa (1952-2008) who lived and worked in Zimbabwe. This piece, which is a little reminiscent of the work by English sculptor Henry Moore, is carved from serpentine stone which lends it its green coloring with splashes of yellow/lime highlights. The sculpture is signed with his incised "D. Manuhwa" on the base. Manuhwa was born in Rusape District, Zimbabwe, in 1952. His father, Fabian Manuhwa, a wood carver, taught his son to carve at an early age. Damian was inspired to sculpt in stone after seeing the work of Joram Mariga. Manuhwa's work has been featured in numerous group exhibitions in the USA, Europe and the UK and can be found in the British Museum, London, United Kingdom, The Museum of Modern Art, New York as well as several African and European public collections. He is remembered as one of the most diverse of leading Zimbabwean sculptors This work would clearly be a great addition to any African abstract/figurative or modern art/sculpture collection or make for an eye-catching stand-alone accent artwork in about any setting.
