About the Item
A small sculpture, almost animated, a creature. 'A chunk of Earth' resembles in a way the bundles of textile waste that are being shipped to poor countries, because of the tonnes of textiles and garments we discard, and which have no second life or are given any interest.
By giving this little bundle legs, Gemert makes the piece become sort of ‘cute’. The layers of textiles are composed so it resembles the layers in the ground, the flora and sky on top of that. In the layers little gems are hidden, like the gems and treasures the earth holds for us, that we extract in brutal ways. By making this a cute bundle, Gemert emphasises caring for and loving our beautiful, wonderful planet, and encourages us to seriously reconsider everything we call waste.
When witnessing the tremendous amount of waste generated by fast fashion – an industry she worked within for many years – Femke van Gemert realised it was time for her to follow her own path and start using textiles differently.
“Every piece of textile has been designed, produced, and worn or used otherwise. Therefore, every piece of textile has a story, a particular atmosphere and beauty. Every piece of textile that I use has been eaten, digested and discarded by society.”
Femke’s practice reveals an alternative renaissance of textile leftovers, enriched with her sense of emotion and distinct personal touch. Loss and hope, imperfection and degradation over time are all recurring themes in her work.
The result is highly emotional pieces which intertwine personal experiences with broader, universal issues, while also drawing attention to the present environmental crisis by taking inspiration from the ever-lasting circularity of nature.

Elisabet Urpí Ràfols and Nacho Umpiérrez Fripp, collectively known as ELIURPI, are the creative duo behind our brand. Based in Barcelona, we specialize in shaping unique pieces through a fusion of culture, architecture, and contemporary art.
Founded 14 years ago, ELIURPI originally gained recognition for our sculptural hats. Over time, our artistic scope has broadened to encompass sculptures and art-design pieces. Recently, we showcased our latest creations at the Milan Fair, including an individual exhibition at Palazzo Litta titled "Shadows and Poems," inspired by Junichiro Tanizaki’s "In Praise of Shadows," which extols chiaroscuro as the pinnacle of beauty. Raffia served as the central material uniting all exhibited pieces, creating a harmonious narrative throughout the exhibition space.
Our professional and personal lives intertwine, enriching our distinctive artistic language that blends cultural traditions with contemporary aesthetics. We draw inspiration from the interplay of light and shadow, while craftsmanship, creativity, and integrity guide our use of natural materials such as wood, straw, raffia, linen, and silk.
Notable milestones include our ongoing exhibitions during ARCO week in Madrid, as well as appearances in international art galleries and craft biennials. In 2023, our work "Sculptural Head Object...
