About the Item

A figure of remarkable formal harmony and compactness with large rounded breasts that allude to fertility and nurturing capacity, but also to the loveliness of the girl that promotes mating and procreation. Hairstyle of crested hair, eyes obtained with two studs, and ethnic fleshing on different parts of the body. This statue was adorned with jewelry as evidenced by the necklace and the holes in the ears that were used to hang beads. The fine patina of use allows the original color of the wood to show through, particularly on the breasts and face. The "Jonyeleni" ancestors are carved by the Bamana ethnic group of Mali for the initiatory worship of Jo involving both boys and girls. They are smaller in size than the "Jomooni" figures, the maternity figures used instead in the annual jarason cult. Both statues represent the ideal of female beauty, but while the "Joomoni" specifically embodies the value of motherhood, the "Jonyeleni" is a depiction of the maiden at the height of her youthful splendor and her capacity for sexual attraction aimed at procreation. These figures are displayed during the Jo ceremonies held every seven years, which are aimed at maintaining social order and harmony.
