"Gemini Bi", Ceramic Sculpture, Stoneware / Mixed Media

About the Item

"Gemini Bi", part of the "You Could Be So Much More" series. Ceramic sculptures in stoneware, oil, glitter, enamel, and acrylic. Measures 31" x 12" x 9" approx. 2021. BIO: Stef Duffy was born in New York, NY, and studied illustration, figurative painting, sculpture and ceramics at Parsons, FIT, Skidmore and NYAA. Drawing inspiration from both the mannerist and surrealist school while utilizing traditional classical Dutch and Venetian techniques, his sculptures and paintings are contemporary allegories layered with satirical references to fashion, commodification, sexuality and class. Satire and provocation are tools of investigation, antagonizing current cultural conflicts of classical vs abstract, self vs other, model vs monster, and secular vs spiritual. Often the subjects of his paintings are caught in a moment of dynamic intimacy, under some sort of stress, recognition, or surveillance, and the viewer is cast as voyeur, witness or spy. Studio visits are available and by appointment at Mana Contemporary.

A beautiful and thoughtful found object sculpture titled Cage of Fear made from a vintage birdcage collaged with gingham, leopard fabric and cigar box wrappings. Inside the cage is a 3 dimensional arrangement of mixed-media objects including childrens' blocks that spell F E A R, the hand of a clock, a disturbing plastic doll that hangs from a pulley, and deer horns. The interior of the cage is a metaphor for the jail of fear we construct in our own minds, while outside the cage there remains a constant of beauty and hope. An antique shamrock paper clip at the top suggests luck, a Murano glass piece of candy and vintage brass cherub...

  • Mixed-Media Sculpture Dror Karta

A wonderful mixed-media sculpture by the noted Israeli Artist Dror Karta. This sculpture was in a traveling exhibition and is pictured in the book. The exhibition was about Palestinian and Israeli artists, who were given the same bowl to start. This is the actual piece. It is signed as well. It is a ceramic bowl, four glass leaves and lots of little bottles inside loose. The glass leaves are molded into the ceramic base by some kind of white epoxy. The leaves have been repaired at the base with the epoxy and quite a few of the little bottles have damage. There is a small chip on the underside.
