About the Item
A further examination of "The Challis" these sculptural pieces are an offering, a gift, a ritual. Rather than a cup to be used it is a piece to be celebrated. Each one completely unique. Building on the beautiful dark brown clay body, these pieces go a step further, offering a fantastical interior to gaze upon. Growing up out of the Challis, there is beauty and desire, power and intent. The curious will look in, the satisfied will gaze from afar. All is good! To those who look closely they will be rewarded with the observable technique of the artist: finger marks, scraping, the pinching and forming of the raw clay, glaze added to the bare challis form. Again, no two could ever be the same and the uniqueness can be celebrated. Signed with Artist's signature chop underneath.

Helena Starcevic Ceramics
Helena Starcevic Ceramics produces work that straddles the line between fine and decorative art. Each piece is one of a kind, hand-built entirely by the artist in her New York studio. Taking inspiration from the natural world, Ms. Starcevic's work includes references to the stark beauty of the desert, prehistoric cave paintings, and the human form (within and without). Everything is filtered through Ms. Starcevic’s own singular aesthetic, at once quiet yet strong, meditative, and beautiful. Pieces are made in different clays and finishes, and at different scales. Groupings are available. Helena Starcevic’s ceramic pieces are held in private collections across the US and Europe. She has held numerous residencies including one at the Museum of Art and Design in New York City.

Matte Black Hand Built Ceramic TOTEM "Take a Bite" on Tripod Legs
By Helena Starcevic Ceramics
Located in New York, NY
One of a trio of fully hand built ceramic TOTEMS in matte black under glazed stoneware. This one, "Take a Bite" has a small arc-like bite at the top. They each have their own personality which occurs when clay is hand-formed into shapes, connected together, and fired in a hot kiln. The surface is textured and coated with underglaze, giving the impression of black clay. Pictured below with 2 sister pieces: "Tall Feather" and "First Walk on the Moon...
