Leon Applebaum Sculpture or Paperweight, American Studio Art Glass, 1978
About the Item
Vintage art glass sculpture features complex fused glass design in Post-Modern style with the central controlled bubble. Cylindrical piece has rounded base and top, and the rounded edges of the sculpture are emphasized by the massive reflective central bubble in hot pink glass; the surrounding cobalt blue and bright yellow fused glass tendril like structures are placed on underlying layer of fused yellow and pink glass, tying up the colors and adding complexity and visual interest to the piece. The interactions between fused glass tendrils and the reflective, mirror-like bubble surface create a mesmerizing effect with illusion of movement, adding an interactive element to the piece.
Modernist shape of the sculpture and the ratio of clear to colored glass in the piece reflect on an important aspect of Leon’s glass work, his continuing interest in exploration of visual dimensions of massive glass and reflective interiors; the choice of color palette shows the influence of Memphis school and Scandinavian Modern glass art. The piece can be displayed as a sculpture or used as a paperweight.
The sculpture is signed and dated (Leon Applebaum 1978) by the artist in etching on the side near the base. Rare, hard to find example of artist's early work would make a great gift to an art glass collector or a design enthusiast.
Born in Toledo, OH in 1945, Leon Applebaum grew up in what would become the birthplace of American studio glass. He completed his BFA at the Massachusetts College of Art and then received his MA at Peabody College of Vanderbilt University. Although Leon experienced success exhibiting and selling his work as an undergraduate, he sought to further his education beyond what the available universities could offer; in 1973 he traveled to study at the Orrefors Glass School, where he began to explore the Swedish style of optically thick glass that would influence the future of his work. After a year of studying and working at Boda Glass in Sweden, Leon returned to the US to pursue his MFA in glass from the Rochester Institute of Technology. During this period, Leon was able to synthesize the Swedish glass techniques with his ideas of using the color spectrum and use of air bubbles as a design element, that continue to define his work.
He has taught at RIT and Naples Mill Art School in Naples, NY, and conducted workshops throughout the country. Leon Applebaum's work is on display in the permanent collections of the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum, Washington D.C., the Corning Museum of Glass, Corning, NY, and the Ajeto Glass Museum, Novy Bor, Czech Republic, among many others. He is represented by many galleries, both nationally and internationally. Leon currently resides with his family in Prattsburgh, NY, at Sahaj Glass Studio.
