These fanciful and imagined spiky fruit are truly a work of art, by artist and collector, Mario Villa. These whimsical shapes have an air of Central American objets d'art.
Mario Villa, a multi-talented artist who created distinctive furniture, paintings, sculpture and jewelry, ran his namesake Magazine Street gallery, one of the first in New Orleans dedicated to displaying contemporary art, for decades.
After the death of Mario Villa in May of 2021, Neal Auction House in NOLA was given the opportunity to sell the collection of his gallery and home. These carved, wooden spiky fruit were part of the estate and pieces made by the artist himself.
