Mid Century Large Scale Carved Sculptural Wooden Shelf Art on Heavy Steel Base

About the Item

An impressive large scale sculptural wooden shelf art with good form and a beautiful rich warm wood colour tone. These would have been originally carved for use as plaster moulds for producing decorative wall plaques. Hand carved symmetrical from, this reverse impression of the plaster pattern provides a beautiful, almost mesmerizing form. The plaque is mounted on a bespoke made heavy raw steel base to provide weight and contrasting texture to the wood. This piece will add character and texture to your internal décor and will work equally well in a modernist contemporary setting or traditional architecture. A truly unique piece of shelf art, with a history and individual character that cannot be matched by newer made pieces. And what better tribute to those skilled craftsmen that originally made these than for their work to live on and be appreciated as art form. Dating to around 1950s, possibly earlier.
