About the Item

A fine early Inuit sculpture from the remote Arctic village of Eskimo Point, also known as Arviat, depicting a seated and leaning figure. A very lively expressive carving. We attribute this piece to Marc Alikaswa: Marc Alikaswa ᒪ ᐃᓕᑲᓱᐊ (1928-2008), Arviat (Eskimo Point) basalt stone numbered to base A leading artist of his generation, Marc Alikaswa (1928 – 2008) was known for his distinctive depictions of human figures in grey or black stone. Neither exactly clothed nor unclothed, Alikaswa’s bulky portraits of people sitting or kneeling are distinguished by their unpolished surfaces blunted forms unencumbered by ornate detail. Elemental and often even stark in mood, these works reflect a deep connection, both materially and thematically, to the land from which they emanate. The earthy feel of Inuit art is not only historic, but grounds Minimalist art collections.
