Artwork produced in late 20th century. About the Artist: Heidi Melano was the premier mosaic artist who collaborated with and executed works for Fernand Leger, Georges Braques, Marc Chagall, to name a few. One of her largest works is on the east and west facades of the Fernand Leger Museum building in Biot, France. Heidi translated Léger's large figure paintings from the 1920s—figures outlined in thick black lines against bold, minimal backgrounds—into glass and stone. Georges Bauquier, Director of the museum, commissioned Heidi Melano to make monumental mosaics based on Léger's plans for La Triennale di Milano (1951) and for the decoration of the University of Caracas (1954). The Fernand Léger Museum was marked with its seal the cultural landscape of the time by the French cultural minister. Not far from Biot, other projects devoted to the great figures of modern art materialized soon after: in Saint Paul de Vence, the Fondation Maeght in 1964 and in Nice the Marc Chagall museum in 1969. Set on an external wall of the Fondation’s bookshop, mosaic was the first work created by Chagall with this Material (1964-65). Mosaicists Heidi and Lino Melano collaborated on making it. Dedicated to Aimé and Marguerite Maeght, the mosaic represents the founders welcoming visitors. Fondation Maeght also preserves the preparatory model (gouache on paper) which served as the basis for the mosaic. .
