Neolithic Danish Flint Dagger, 1900 BC

About the Item

A Neolithic flint “type III” dagger, from Scandinavia, dating to 1900-1700 BC. Flint daggers such as this represent the pinnacle of prehistoric flint working. Pressure flaked from a piece of chocolate-grey colored flint, the blade is leaf shaped, with a thick handle, delicately and beautifully knapped throughout. The square cross-sectioned handle, an example of which can be seen on this piece, required great sophistication to accomplish and seems to have been the unique achievement of Neolithic Scandinavian flint-knappers, as it is not found anywhere else in the world during this period. As the societies of prehistoric Europe began to adopt metalworking, the ancient Scandinavians continued in their use of flint, delighting in the art of this old technology. This precious dagger mimics the form of elite bronze weapons that were circulating in Europe at the time. It is beautifully poetic, mirroring the technology that would ultimately supplant it and providing one final, beautiful flourish of the European flint industry. Provenance: Formerly in the collection of Lars Otto Johan Holst (1863-1936), a veterinary surgeon who was active in Ronneby, southern Sweden from around 1887. Mr. Holst took a strong interest in the prehistory of ancient Scandinavia and he obsessively acquired throughout his career, forming one of the most magnificent collections of early Stone Age artefacts. He obtained these objects from around Ronneby, partly through gathering himself, and partly as payment for work done in his service as a vet between 1887-1929. Please note that the new owner will be provided with a copy of two photographs showing Mr. Holst in his office and his collection mounted on the wall. The new purchaser will also be provided with a colour image of the original board, where this artefact is identifiable.

Measure: Height: 19.7 cm This beautiful Roman fragmentary statuette depicts Jupiter, the king of the gods, here recognisable from his two chief attributes, the eagle with outstretched wings - according the Pseudo-Hyginus, singled out by Jupiter because ''it alone, men say, strives to fly straight into the rays of the rising sun'' - and the base of the scepter, which remains at the side of the left foot, an aspect likely borrowed from the statue of Zeus at Olympia, once one of the Seven Wonders of the World.
