Organic Green Vessel, Sangwoo Kim

About the Item

Sprout, 2023 (Ceramic, C. 11 in. h x 18.5 in. w x 12.2 in. d, Object No.: 4171) Sangwoo Kim was born in Korea in 1980 and currently lives and works in France. He received his degree from the National University in Seoul and is the recipient of several prestigious awards and grants. In 2017 he was a LOEWE Craft prize finalist. Sangwoo’s work is represented in the permanent collections of several international museums. The designer is inspired by the shapes and the colors of nature. As Sangwoo notes “In nature the colors are not made out of pure red, yellow or blue. Each color is made of combinations. In my work, I express this natural feeling with several layers of colors. Colors are allways a mix, and depending on how they are layered they change. I play with the arrangement and thickness of colored layers in order to create deep shade of hues”. Kim makes his sculptures and vessels with coils or slabs of clay and applies several layers of colored slips. After firing the artsit grinds and polishes his works instead of using a glaze. Through this process, he slowly creates the patterns and colors of the surface. Sangwoo is inspired by rounded and circular designs. Kim himself reveals that “rounded froms have the power to give imagination and emotion to human beeings. It is a topic with the possibility of expressing eternal beauty. The rounded shape contains the charm of the person who made it according to how the form is handled”.

White Undulating Organic Vessel, Sandra Davolio
Located in New York, NY
Coral Flower II, 2023, (Porcelain, C. 14.5 in. h x 10.6 in. diam., Object No.: 4184) Davolio’s sophisticated porcelain works and their organic and natural references are influenced by the Art Nouveau style, the keen interest in the mechanics of futurism, and the minimalist and linear approach typical to Scandinavian Design. In the past 15 years, Davolio has positioned herself as an internationally renowned ceramicist. J. Lohmann Gallery discovered this talented artist in Europe in 2007 and introduced Davolio’s work to the United States in 2008. She has developed a unique oeuvre over several decades that is unparalleled. Her work conveys a deep connection to nature, and in particular to the sea. Davolio herself reveals that she “feels deep devotion and passion while working” and experiences “wonderful peaceful moments when creating something new from raw clay” with her hands. The elaborate porcelain sculptures and vessels suggest organic biomorphic forms, mostly aquatic shapes like coral reefs and undulating leaves. A graduate of The Danish School of Design, Davolio is influenced by the minimalist design aesthetic in Copenhagen, as can be seen in many of the artist’s unique and artistically important creations, in which a series of concentric lamellas emanate from the central column of a vase. She also draws inspiration from the ceramic traditions of ancient Mediterranean...
