Pair of 19th Century French Sandstone Sorcerer Stones Polyedres
These geometrically sculpted sanstone stones are so called Polyedres or multifaceted geometrical forms. These kind of forms were introduced to a wider public from the Renaissance on and hold in them the knowledge of nature and the world around us since Antiquity. They were studied by artists, scientists and artisans. Until the 19th century novice trainee artisans had to proof their ability’s by so called Maitrises or apprentice pieces. This is a good example of this custom. They are also called sorcerer stones because they were believed to protect the owners house when placed in the garden or on entrance pillars as a finial. They are presented on a custom iron stand.
