About the Item
Each exquisite ornament consists of a spherical smokey rock crystal ball resting atop a faceted rock crystal base. The spheres are smoothly polished, displaying internal veining, fissures, and natural inclusions characteristic of the mineral. The bases are cut into rectangular block form with chamfered top edges, their surfaces likewise polished to a high clarity, revealing the translucent, clouded interior structure of the stone. A silver-toned metal collar with an incised overlapping ribbon motif is set between each sphere and base, serving as a connecting element. The natural crystalline composition results in variations in color from pale brown to deeper smokey tones, with occasional reflective planes and iridescent flashes visible under light.
The pair is executed in the Art Deco style, combining geometric forms with refined mineral surfaces. The rock crystal has been worked to achieve sharply defined edges on the base and a uniform curvature on the sphere, requiring careful shaping and polishing. The collars are crafted in a continuous circular form with a repeating incised pattern, fitted precisely to secure the spheres in place. The use of smokey rock crystal aligns with decorative trends of the period, where natural quartz varieties were incorporated into ornamental and architectural objects.
Production of such ornaments involved extracting sizable quartz specimens, cutting them to proportion, and shaping the spheres and bases individually before pairing them. The stone’s natural inclusions and internal fractures were preserved, enhancing the characteristic appearance of smokey quartz. The metal collars would have been produced separately, likely cast and then hand-finished with the decorative pattern, before being affixed to the bases to support the spheres. The overall assembly demonstrates precision in both lapidary work and metal fitting, consistent with decorative objects produced in the Art Deco era.
