About the Item

A charming primitive flax comb or hetchel. Germany, probably early 19th century. Originally, the comb was used to produce the hard-wearing natural fibre linen. The stalks of the harvested flax or hemp plants were pulled through the flax comb to separate the seed capsules from the stalk. Today this authentic handmade piece is very decorative as an object on the wall or especially as a lying platform for smaller pieces of all kinds, which are particularly emphasised by the contrast with the rustic wood and the many small iron nails. Pieces like this belong both to European culture and especially to American culture. Dimensions Height: 9 cm / 3.54 inch. Width: 62 cm / 24.4 inch. Depth: 14 cm / 5.51 inch.
