The danish Sculptor Gerda Thune Andersen's Houses of Memory (1992) is a profound and evocative bronze sculpture that draws the viewer into a contemplative exploration of form, memory, and symbolism. Crafted in Denmark, this work features a tapering cone-like shape reminiscent of ancient ziggurats or the Tower of Babel, merging architectural and abstract elements. The single staircase ascending to the top of the structure creates a sense of journey and aspiration, leading to a small aperture—a door or passage—that invites interpretations of access, mystery, or transcendence. The design evokes themes of memory as a layered and ascending construct, where the apex represents a gateway to understanding or a final resolution. The materiality of the bronze, with its rich patina, adds depth and texture, enhancing the sculpture's timeless and monumental quality despite its intimate scale. By combining elements of architecture and personal symbolism, Andersen captures the universal human experience of seeking, remembering, and imagining. This work is a compelling example of late 20th-century Danish sculpture, blending modernist abstraction with deeply resonant storytelling. Signed: GTA 92/93 (46) -- Gerda Thune Andersen is the daughter of senior physician Troels Thune Andersen and Karen Bergtrup Christiansen and was married in 1958 to forest manager Nils Wiljelm Hammer Kjølsen. She studied with Gottfred Eickhoff, Johannes Bjerg and Einar Utzon-Frank at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen 1954–1959 and for a period in 1956 was a student at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. She received a scholarship from the Carlsberg Foundation in 1958 and the Danish Art Academy's gold medal in 1959 as well as the Niels Prize award in 2014. From the mid-1950s she participated in most spring exhibitions at Charlottenborg in Copenhagen and from 1965 in exhibitions at Skåne's art association. Among her public works can be e.g. mention is made of the bronze sculptures Tine at Ängelholm's hospital, Legende barn in Bromölla and a memorial relief of Niels Egede in Egedesminde in Greenland as well as a ceramic relief in Rønne on Bornholm. In the mid-1960s she settled in Skåne where she built her own studio and in the early 1990s she moved from there to Africa, where she periodically lived in Mozambique, Laos and Kenya. Since 2011, she has been active in Cairo. Her art consists of reliefs, figures or portraits made in plaster, wood, stone or bronze. Gerda Thune Andersen is represented in the collections of e.g. Regional Museum Kristianstad, Statens Museum for Art and Vendsyssel Art Museum.
