Sculptural "Rhino #5" Table Lamp by Bill Stewart, American Art Studio Pottery
About the Item
Striking ceramic table lamp is comprised of hand-sculpted rhino figurine with a bird sitting on its neck; the rhino is mounted on long conical totem pole, formed in coil technique. The lamp is glazed in bright yellow, deep green, and black as main colors, with some colorful painted accents of bugs and insects. It is marked with "Rhino Lamp 5" on top element housing the socket.
The lamp stands 32.25" tall to the top of the socket; it some glaze loss that can be professionally repaired if desired - please see pictures. We did not feel that the glaze issues are distracting from the overall impression or the artistic message, so we decided to leave the final decision on restoration to the future owners.
Bill Stewart (1941-2020) was an established sculptor and ceramic artist, who was working in western New York area and teaching as Professor Emeritus at SUNY Brockport. Bill Stewart's sculpture explores diverse concepts, such as non-linear chronology, body decoration and costumes, and folk and naïve art. Stewart invited a juxtaposition of disparate parts and components in his work, striving to produce "an eccentric energy," creating "off-center, weird, absurd, and irreverent" works of art, as he explained in his interviews. Stewart's work often includes flamboyant conglomeration of animals, birds, cars, fish, insects, snakes, toys, and countless other details that are deconstructed, mixed up, and reassembled in a whimsical and enigmatic manner; the final sculpture might be a single color, like white or black, or glazed with a rainbow of bright, flashy colors. Sometimes his sculptures end up being rather large in size; for example, Stewart's site-specific commissioned installation for the Greater Rochester International Airport In Rochester, New York, The Council (1990), is a monumental group of 5 masked or animal headed figures and a bird sculpture that stand up to 10 feet tall in a granite pool of water that is 16 feet in diameter.
Stewart's work was shown in group and solo exhibitions in museums and galleries nationwide and internationally, including Dallas Museum of Art and The Museum of Modern Art (MOMA), with pieces retained in permanent collections of multiple major museums and institutions, including MOMA and Burchfield Penney Art Center.
