About the Item

Under Pressure 7 by Yuri van Poppel. Dimensions: D 27 x H 55 cm. One of a kind. Material: earthenware, layered ceramic glazes, various colours. Handmade and spray-painted by hand by SunkOne. Removable lid. Everlasting graffiti spray-painted with ceramic glaze. Under Pressure pays homage to the rich history and culture of graffiti writing, referencing both a writer’s tools and targets at the same time. From the cap of the first marker used to get up, to the fire extinguisher used for getting up higher. An echo of structures and machinery, industrial wastelands in the orange night light. Powerful memories and sensations poured into a robust ob- ject -and a refined work of art. A unique handmade earthenware object, spray-painted by hand in various layers of ceramic glaze. Glazed Graffiti explores the aesthetic value of vandalism. A post-graffiti project by SunkOne, aiming to eternize graffiti-writing by trespassing into a new artistic medium. Glazed Graffiti was born out of the desire to write graffiti that lasts forever. To make this shift from ephemeral to eternal, graffiti writer SunkOne had to cross the boundaries of traditional street graffiti. By changing the con- text of street tagging he wants to further explore the aesthetics of what is often labeled as vandalism. To him, the tactility, opacity and shine of ceramic glaze mirrored the mesmerizing appearance of wet paint and ink, so he set out to engineer a spray can that would enable him to paint with ceramic glaze without losing what he loves most about graffiti: the raw energy and the rudimentary lines. With these air pressurized spray cans he is free to move around ceramic objects and surfaces and capture the powerful visual language of graffiti writing in imperishable works of art. About SunkOne SunkOne (Yuri van Poppel, 1975) is a Dutch designer, contemporary artist and graffiti writer. Since drawing was his way to express himself as a child, he was instantly hooked when graffiti came from New York to Europe in the mid-eighties. Seeing his name up written in stylized letters was an extremely powerful feeling to him at that age -and it still is. After studying art history and design in the UK and The Netherlands, he worked in design and advertising winning multiple awards for his creative work. Simultaneously he participated in various national and international projects and exhibitions with his graffiti work. With Glazed Graffiti, he is the first ever to spray ceramic glazes using custom built spray cans, capturing the raw energy of street writing in a new artistic medium.

Thaddeus Wolfe, "Untitled", 2022
By Thaddeus Wolfe
Located in New York, NY
Thaddeus Wolfe [American, b. 1979] Untitled, 2022 Glass 29.25 x 16.25 x 10.5 inches 74.3 x 41.3 x 26.7 cm Brooklyn-based Thaddeus Wolfe has developed a wholly original approach to sculpting glass. Combining techniques of glassblowing and casting, Wolfe achieves what would not otherwise be possible in the material--developing his signature vocabulary of angular, highly textured forms. His unique process begins by sculpting a form from broken and carved styrofoam pieces, using meticulous yet improvisatory methods. From this form, Wolfe generates a single-use plaster mold for casting the glass. Color and texture are achieved by layering different tints of glass onto a glass bubble, which is inflated into the cavity of the heated mold. After un-molding the piece, Wolfe carves and polishes certain surfaces to reveal the interior strata. The resulting works which he often refers to as assemblages are part painterly, part geological. Wolfe has held residencies at Creative Glass Center of America Millville, NJ; Museum of Glass, Tacoma, WA; and Pilchuck Glass School, Stanwood, WA. His work is in the permanent collections of the Corning Museum of Glass, NY (where he was awarded the 2016 Rakow Commission); Indianapolis Museum of Art, IN; Musée de Arts...
