Obwohl ein eindeutig raumliches Motiv, ist die Landschaft in erster Linie ein Thema der Malerei und nicht der Plastik. In der Plastik dominiert die geschlossene Form, der zusammenhangende Formkomplex, die Figur, die ihre Ursprunge meist im Menschenbild findet. Wenn ein Plastiker wie Maximilian Hutlett dreidimensionale Landschaften formt, so betritt er damit kunstlerisches Neuland, erobert er sich eine raumliche Dimension, die dem klassischen Begriff von Skulptur fremd ist. So hat z.B. die Land-Art der 60er und 70er Jahre in groben Dimensionen Landschaftsraume als plastiche Volumina akzentuiert, strukturiet oder einfach umgrenzt. Die plastischen Arbeiten Hutletts gehen zwar von einer ganz ahnlichen Vorstellung von Landschaft aus, fuhren aber zu anderen Ergebnissen. Berge, Hugel, Furchem, Felsen, Baume, Wellen, Wasserflachen, Turme, Hauser und Wege sind Stark reduziert, zu fast abstrakten Formen verdichtet, und wie Versatzstucke auf einer Bodenflache aufgebaut, einander zugeordnet zu einembuhnenartigen Ensemble. Die Einzelformen nahern sich in ihrer Reduktion zwar geometrischen Korpern, lassen aber in jedem Fall noch Assoziationen mit Naturformen zu. Diese abstrahierten Landschaften sind sich selbst genug, keine menschliche oder tierische Form degradiert Einzelteilen aufbaut, bestimmt den Charakter der Plastik. Diese kleinen, sparsam akzentuierten, strengen Landschaften sind private Welten, Ruckzugsgebiete fur Vorstellung und Phantasie, fur Traum und Flucht, kein 'Hortus conclusus' mit schutzender Mauer, sondern eher der Platz fur eine 'Eremitage', - keine liebliche Gegend, sondern ein Ort der Askese. "Landschaft fur einen Eremiten" hat der Kunstler auch einen seiner plastischen Raume genannt. Die Landschaftist wohl seit etwa zehn Jahren das Hauptthema im Schaffen Maximilian Hutletts, aber es ist nicht das einzige. Am Anfang stehen Holzfiguren, abstrakt, oft aus mehrenen Einzelteilen zusammengesetzt, aber als geschlossene Korper konzipiert. Maximilian Hutlett, in Zweibrucken geboren, lebt seit 1977 wieder in der Pfalz. Zwolf Jahre, 1965-1977 verbrachte er in Berlin. Nach einer Schreinerlehre und seiner Ausbildung zum Holzbildhauer an der Meisterschule in Kaiserslautern, studierte er an der Werkkunstschule Saarbrucken bei Theo Siegle. 1965 lieb er sich in Berlin nieder und in diese Zeit fallt nicht nur der Ubergang vom Holz zum Material Bronze - nur noch wenige Holzskulpturen entstehen nach diesem Jahr - sondern auch der Durchbruch zu einer eigenen Aussage, zu einer ganz charakteristischen 'Handschrift', zu neuen Themen und Formen. Zunachst sind es Figuren, in Teilen noch von menschlichen Korperformen abgeleitet, aber Stark vereinfacht und frei komponiert, so das ein abstrakter Korper, ein Zeichen fur Mensch daraus entsteht, eine symbolische Form, gerundet und korperhaft. Aber auch Stilleben, Fruchtformen entstehen, die Basis der plastischen Arbeit verbreitert sich, kleine Einzelfiguren ragen monolithisch in die Hohe, auf breiten Flachen finden sich unterschiedliche Teile zu einem Ensemble geordnet. Die Skulptur erobet sich die Raumtiefe, um darauf mit ihren Figuren zu spielen, um wie auf einer Buhne mit ihnen Regie zu fuhren.
