White Cactus-like Abstract Sculpture, Lone Skov Madsen

About the Item

Cactus Vessel II, 2023, (Ceramic, C. 8.7 in. h x 7.5 in. w x 7.6 in. d, 4800) Lone Skov Madsen was born in 1964, and lives and works in Frederiksberg, Denmark. She received degrees from the Danish Design School in Copenhagen in 1988 and the Istituto Statale d’Arte per la Ceramica in Faenza, Italy in 1989. There is a clear connection between the consistency that Skov Madsen establishes in her research of surfaces, material and ornamentalism, and her efforts that carry the exploration of form systems. Repetitions and the variations in the sequences absorb her interest primarily. Skov Madsen has a cool and rational approach, which- almost against expectations- emanates utterly sensual and palpably interesting results. The field of exploration for Lone Skov Madsen’s ceramic practice lies in the intertwined relationship between design and crafts with the vase, the jar, and the tray as the most frequently occurring object categories.

Ruffled Blue and White Cactus-like Ceramic Sculpture, Sandra Davolio
By Sandra Davolio
Located in New York, NY
Coral Vase III, 2023, (Porcelain, C. 11.8 in. h x 5.5 in. diam., Object No.: 4195) Davolio’s sophisticated porcelain works and their organic and natural references are influenced by the Art Nouveau style, the keen interest in the mechanics of futurism, and the minimalist and linear approach typical to Scandinavian Design. In the past 15 years, Davolio has positioned herself as an internationally renowned ceramicist. J. Lohmann Gallery discovered this talented artist in Europe in 2007 and introduced Davolio’s work to the United States in 2008. She has developed a unique oeuvre over several decades that is unparalleled. Her work conveys a deep connection to nature, and in particular to the sea. Davolio herself reveals that she “feels deep devotion and passion while working” and experiences “wonderful peaceful moments when creating something new from raw clay” with her hands. The elaborate porcelain sculptures and vessels suggest organic biomorphic forms, mostly aquatic shapes like coral reefs and undulating leaves. A graduate of The Danish School of Design, Davolio is influenced by the minimalist design aesthetic in Copenhagen, as can be seen in many of the artist’s unique and artistically important creations, in which a series of concentric lamellas emanate from the central column of a vase. She also draws inspiration from the ceramic traditions of ancient Mediterranean...

Ron Arad's first creations are furniture made with metal tubes and called "one-offs" because they are unique pieces. One Off is also the name of his first company. Ron Arad became famous in the early 1970s, thanks to the creation of seats inspired by the armchairs of a Rover, seats that he found in a car junkyard. Also among Ron Arad's best-known pieces are the Bookworm shelf from 1993 and the Tom Vac chair from 1997. His surprising work makes him a free creator without constraints or borders who navigates between design, architecture and plastic arts. Ron Arad uses materials such as plastic, polished steel or aluminum to create elements made of aerial scrolls. His creations with sinusoidal, elliptical or ovoid shapes range from unique pieces to industrial production, including limited series. In 2008, the Center Pompidou presents a retrospective of his work, entitled "No Discipline". There are major and emblematic pieces of the artist, prototypes accompanied by audiovisuals, limited series and objects of industrial production as well as numerous architectural projects. Ron Arad, whose works are exhibited in museums and galleries around the world, creates pieces for renowned houses such as Vitra, Kartell, Moroso, Artemide and Alessi. .
