Zoë Powell, Ceramic Vessel, Vestige Series

About the Item

Freeform ceramic sculpture made from a blend of porcelaneous and stoneware clays hand-collected by the artist in Minnesota. Its surface is hand-polished with diamond sandpaper to render a matte finish. Signed with the artist’s mark. The Vestige Series compiles limited works, experiments, and form studies from Zoë Powell’s projects, representing an ongoing practice in the artist’s studio, released for the first time through Satyricon as a unique body of work. Each item is carefully finished to reference a minute version of one of her larger sculptures. Items from this series resemble objects that might be housed in a Cabinet of Curiosities - - alongside pieces of natural history, falsified oddities, and historical relics. A collector of objects herself, Powell seeks to enchant others with these caches. This series highlights a range of experimental ceramic surfaces, fired in different kilns. Despite the spectrum of colors and textures, the pieces complement one another and are ideally displayed in small groupings. - - - - - - - - - - - - ABOUT THE ARTIST: Zoë Powell’s work consists of organic sculptural vessels made from clays and minerals she collects and processes herself. She views working with locally sourced materials as an exercise in sustainability and aims to take full responsibility for a material by honoring it throughout the production process. She is interested in psychological pathology and how external relationships can influence an individual’s mental and emotional state. Zoë graduated from the College of William & Mary in 2016 with a B.A. in Fine Arts and a B.S. in Biology. She is currently working from Studio Alluvium, a gallery and local clay production studio she co-founded with her partner in St. Paul, Minnesota. Her work has recently been featured in: Dwell, American Craft, and Ceramics Monthly. In addition to private collections, her pieces have been exhibited in various galleries, academic institutions, and museums across the United States and Europe.

Richard Hirsch Ceramic Ceremonial Vessel #10, Tripod Vessels Collection, 1994
By Richard A. Hirsch
Located in New York, NY
Contemporary American ceramic artist Richard Hirsch's Tripod Ceremonial Vessel #10 is raku-fired, hand built and hand sculptured. The tripod is uniquely with bronze acrylic, iron-rust interactive acrylic, airbrushed enamels (red, green and yellow) all layered on top of each other. Signed by the artist, each piece is comprised of a marriage of four elements -- a vessel held aloft by three legs. The process of fluid transition between the elements so that the product reads as one form was vital as he built the foundation for his signature collection. The Tripod Vessels...
