About the Item

Titled "La danse du tambourin, tête penchée à droite" ("Tambourine dance, head leaning to the right"), from the artist's series "Le jeu d'écharpe," this French Art Nouveau bisque ceramic sculpture by the great master Agathon Léonard hearkens back to the Renaissance sculptors of lore, who turned marble into flesh and fabric, just as Léonard does here with ceramic. Featuring a woman draped in stunningly rendered, rich cloth dress who holds a tambourine high above her head, her face turned away from the viewer as we catch her mid-motion, about to turn dramatically over her left shoulder. Product Details: Item #: S-13307 Artist: Agathon Léonard Circa: 1900s Dimensions: 20" height, 5.75" diameter Materials: Bisque ceramic Signed: "Sevres" and "No. 4" Literature: Similar ceramic figural sculpture is pictured in Dynamic Beauty: Sculpture of Art Nouveau Paris, by Macklowe Gallery, The Studley Press, 2011, p. 187; Similar ceramic figural sculpture also pictured in Agathon Léonard: Le geste Art Nouveau, by Ingelore Böstge, Paris: Somogy editions d'art, 2003, p. 51, cat. no. 12 Macklowe Gallery's Curator's Notes: "Le jeu d'écharpe," created by Agathon Léonard at the turn of the 20th century, consists of fifteen sculptures of young women in various poses; some women dance with scarves, others hold musical instruments, or carry flaming torches. Each of the fifteen dancers is unique in terms of her pose, hair style, and dress.
