About the Item

This finely cast bronze embodies 19th‑century naturalistic animalier tradition, presenting a slender pointer in mid‑stride, paw raised in classic pointing gesture. The elongated muzzle is subtly lifted, nostrils flared, and ears gently draped, capturing the breed’s acute alertness. The delicate play of light across the polished patina accentuates the taut musculature and soft textural nuances of the coat, each strand subtly formed to convey lifelike realism. The animal stands bonded to its base—not merely perched atop, but arising organically from the textured ground, evoking the feel of uncultivated terrain. The base itself is integrally cast, detailing tufts of grass and moonlit earth under its stride, enhancing spatial context and narrative depth. Marked “G. Ho???? Fecit 1873,” this work introduces an identifiable, though not yet fully documented, sculptor—"fecit" indicating the artist’s hand in 1873. The figure aligns stylistically with the French and Central European school of animal sculpture, where executant sculptors such as Emile-Ménier, Fratin, and later Barbedienne and Susse Frères issued similar bronzes. The confident modeling, lifesize posture, and virtuosic mise en scène suggest an artist operating at a highly proficient, even atelier‑level scale—likely intended for private collectors with an appreciation for sporting motifs. Although we have been unable to identify the hand who made the sculpture - the date and quality suggest a professional operating within late‑19th‑century European foundry networks. The absence of secure attribution does not obscure the sculpture’s compelling aesthetic and cultural value. Whether a one‑off commission or part of a small atelier’s series, its artistic strength lies in its tight anatomical fidelity—muscle tone, limb articulation, and expression expertly rendered—as well as the harmonious integration with its organic base.
