About the Item

Sculpture of a seated rampant lion, modeled in glazed earthenware and hand-decorated in vivid shades of cobalt blue, mustard yellow, and touches of black, typical of the traditional ceramics of Talavera de la Reina (Spain) or possibly the Puebla school (Mexico), both renowned for their technical heritage and popular expressiveness. The figure is presented on a rectangular base glazed in deep blue, with irregular white spots reminiscent of the "sponging" technique characteristic of certain Talavera workshops. The animal is depicted in an almost naive or archaic style, with a mane outlined in free brushstrokes, an expressive face, and stylized anatomy, giving it a decorative character full of visual force and ethnographic value. These animal figures were common in Hispanic ceramic production of the 18th and 19th centuries, intended for domestic decoration or as symbolic figures in gardens and doorways, often associated with protection and power.
