About the Item
19th century Anglo Indian relief carving of a rat, and elephant riding on a snake or serpent and a tiger. With traces of gilding and remnants of a glass inlaid background. This is a wonderful naive folk art carving of animals, wonderfully out of scale, the rat is as large as the elephant which only adds to the charm.
It is a fragment, perhaps from a circus wagon or structure. My favorite new acquisition, I love everything about it, the animals, the patina of age and use, the traces of gilding and glass bits. If you are looking for a singular piece that will bring a smile to your face, this is it.

View All19th Century Indian Marble Carving of Ganesha, Remover of Obstacles
Located in Stamford, CT
Marble carving of the elephant headed four armed Hindu God Ganesha. With traces of old paint, it now has a rich honey patina from years of devotees touching the surface. Shown seated on a throne in the yoga pose, sukhasana, cross legged meditation pose. Two of his hands grasp a battle axe and a lasso, symbols of his role as a rescuer and protector. His other two hands hold an elephant goad and one of his own tusks, which he broke off in a fit of anger. His rat vehicle is below him.
A great gift for the yogi or yogini in your life. Every home should have one.

A carved soapstone Raj period Indian study of elephants and two Maharajas C1910
Located in Central England, GB
A fine Indian Raj period carved soapstone study of a large elephant carrying two Maharajas and their guide seated high on its back in an elaborate carriage surrounded by a group of young elephants. This superb carving shows great skill from the highly proficient craftsman who has deeply carved and pierced the study with three dimensional detailing. And just to make his work more difficult the body of the large elephant is hollow carved and pierced with a small perfectly carved study of another elephant at its centre which is incredibly difficult to achieve working through the tight delicately carved and pierced scrolls which form its body.
Indian, circa 1910
Height 21cm x width 11cm x depth 9cm
