About the Item
Bring sculptural depth and masculine elegance to a library, study, or office with this finely cast bronze animalier group. Created in Paris circa 1890, the composition portrays two Saint Bernard rescue dogs climbing rocky terrain, one wearing a small brandy flask around his neck, a classic Alpine motif celebrating loyalty and courage. The sculpture is crisply detailed throughout, from the thick curling fur to the expressive muzzles and muscular anatomy. It is signed Ch. Valton on the naturalistic base and rests on an integral oval bronze socle with warm, rich brown patina. Excellent condition commensurate with age and use.
Charles Valton (1851-1918) was one of the leading French animal sculptors of the late 19th century. A pupil of Antoine-Louis Barye and Emmanuel Frémiet, he studied at the École des Beaux-Arts and exhibited regularly at the Paris Salon from 1868 to 1914. His naturalistic portrayals of wild and domestic animals earned him medals in 1875 and 1885, honors at the Expositions Universelles of 1889 and 1900, and the Légion d’Honneur in 1906.
