Antique 18th century Ceramic/Porcelain Pair of Cockfighting Roosters Paris 1780
About the Item
One of the national symbols and emblems of France is the Coq Gaulois (the Gallic Rooster) and it was decorated French flags during the Revolution (1789-1799) .
It is the symbol of French people because of the play on words of the Latin Gallus meaning Gaul and Gallus meaning coq- Rooster.
This late 18th century ceramic/ porcelain Large pair of fighting roosters is an incredibly rare find. The Roosters are hand painted and hand crafted by an outstanding French master of the period. The craftsmanship is remarkable and both of the roosters are in excellent condition despite the age.
It was during the Renaissance that the rooster began to be associated with the emerging French nation. Under the Valois and the Bourbon kings, the royal effigy was often accompanied by this animal, meant to stand for France, in engravings and on coins. This amazing unique pair of fine ceramic/ porcelain large Roosters represents a true spirit of France as well as being a terrific decorative item and a true conversation piece in any design format.
