Antique Ceramic Sculpture of a Borzoi Dog - Jacques Merculiano

About the Item

A beautiful large ceramic sculpture of a Borzoi dog, by the Italian / French artist Giacomo Merculiano. The sculpture has a beautiful elegant appearance and is signed and dated on the base, J. Merculiano, 1911. The Borzoi dog is often used in Art Deco art as a metaphor for modesty, strength and elegance. Giacomo Merculiano has made various sculptures with the Borzoi as a subject, but also other animals. This ceramic version is quite rare. The sculpture is in good condition, only there is a chip on the bottom of the base. Beautiful old patina, grand appearance. Dimensions: 50 x 18 cm and 21 cm high. Free shipping worldwide. About the artist: Giacomo Merculiano (1859-1935) was born in Naples, Italy. He was an Italian sculptor, medallist, and illustrator. He studied at the Institute of Fine Arts in Naples, where he first gained recognition for a stucco statue titled Aspiration, exhibited at the Promotrice of Naples. In 1889 at the same Exhibition, he displayed a bronze statuette titled Canto fermo. He completed the bronze bust for the funereal monument of Count Giulio di Conversano in Camposanto di Naples. While Merculiano also dabbled in painting, sculpture was his main output. By 1900, he was living in Paris, France, and would sign his works Jacques Merculiano or J. Merculiano. He focused mainly on depictions of animals. He exhibited from 1914 on in the Salon in Paris.
