Antique Italian Sterling Silver Equestrian Knights Statues Figures on Horseback

About the Item

These Italian casting silver 800 and vermeil striking equestrian figural statuettes have a definite classical appeal, thanks to the exquisite depiction of rampant horses supporting fighting knights dressed in full medieval military gear, including helmets surmounted with large feathers, shield and swords, both resting on an elegant rectangular green marble pedestal with gilt metal engraved label. These late 19th-early 20th century silver knights are embellished with fine and impressive chased decoration and gilding reproducing the details of the armour, fabric, faces and naturalistic features of the horses under the rider are also dressed in marching armor. The casting is very detailed, finely chiseled on all sides and has gilt accents all decorated to the highest degree of detail and showing marked differences between the two knights. Both finely chased with fine attention to details, this pair of silver and parcel-gilt table ornaments figures- realistically modelled in the form of knights on horseback- are sculpted as a model of Francesco and Ascanio Sforza, respectively father and son, belonging to one of the most important Italian noble dynasties in whose family there are popes and valiant leaders. Francesco Sforza (1401-1466) was the first Duke of Milan belonging to the Sforza dynasty who played a crucial role in 15th century Italian politics founding a dynasty that ruled for nearly a century. Leonardo da Vinci sculpted a monument to the Duke Francesco that was intended to be the largest equestrian statue in the world, Leonardo's horse drawings designed from 1482-1493 demonstrates that Leonardo initially planned a more dynamic design for the monument but at some point he abandoned this idea and acquiesced to a more traditional walking horse. Our sculpture is inspired by these sketches - now kept in Windsor Castle- as this piece features a knight and his horse in a full charging position. The second figure depicts Cardinal Ascanio Maria Sforza Visconti (1450-1505) in highly decorative equestrian armor inspired by the one kept in the museum of the Royal Palace in Turin. These statuettes add a note of grandiose elegance to any decor making them a perfect centerpiece or decoration for an elegant room such as a dining room or a parlor. A great statement piece also as a desk accessory or paper weight in man's office or collectibles to expose on the fireplace mantel (fireplace). Highly collectable and sought after.
