This small sculpture, crafted by hand in nickel-plated bronze, depicts a rabbit with ears bowed in a gesture of meekness, its form affixed atop a sturdy base of matching material. In this case, the signature of artist/designer Sandoz is neatly engraved behind the figure, while the mark of foundry Susse Freres is imprinted below, attesting to the work's quality and authorship.
Sandoz was a renowned swiss animalier sculptor whose bronzes were often cast by the respected parisian foundry Susse Frères. In 1933 he founded the Société Française des Animaliers (French Society of Animal Sculptors) thus becoming one of the most prominent exponents of this style in the 20th century.
