Art Déco Bronze Sculpture of Girl and Goat by Paul Silvestre for Susse Frères

About the Item

Art Déco patinated bronze sculpture of a girl and a jumping goat with marble base by Paul Silvestre for Susse Frères By: Paul Silvestre, Susse Frères Material: bronze, marble, copper, metal Technique: cast, carved, patinated, molded, polished, metalwork Dimensions: 4.5 in x 17 in x 7.5 in Date: early 20th century, circa 1930 Style: Art Déco Place of origin: France This naturally patinated bronze sculpture depicts a nude young woman kneeling as she playfully interacts with a dynamically leaping goat. The figures are seamlessly attached to a heavy rectangular bronze base signed "V. Silvestre" and stamped twice with the Susse Frères foundry mark, all of this supported on a large marble plinth. French sculptor Paul Silvestre, born in Toulouse in 1884 and trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, created this Art Déco work sometime around 1930. The balanced composition and smooth, stylized forms reflect the modernist aesthetic of early 20th century french sculpture. While the theme of a woman and goat derives from pastoral classical motifs, Silvestre renders his subjects with the simplified contours and minimal detail emblematic of Art Déco style. This bronze exemplifies Silvestre's consummate craftsmanship and mastery of the sleek, geometric forms that defined the Mmodernism of french sculpture in the interwar period. The dynamic interaction between the figures and their graceful, streamlined shapes capture the energy and optimism of Art Déco aesthetics.
