The Big Fish Tale: Jeff Raymond’s Legendary Hudson River Sturgeon- 74" Long

About the Item

This hand-carved folk art wooden Hudson River Sturgeon is an exceptional piece by Jeff Raymond (1949-2022, Poughkeepsie and Red Hook, NY), a self-taught artist known for his passion for maritime and Hudson River wildlife. Measuring 74"L x 10 1/2"H x 10 1/2"W, this sculpture retains its original paint and is a definitive example of Raymond’s work, though unsigned. A lifelong artist, Jeff began carving and painting wooden objects as a boy and developed a deep fascination with whaling and aquatic life, themes that heavily influenced his creations. He frequently visited Nantucket, where he was affectionately known as the "Whale Guy", collecting and sculpting pieces inspired by the ocean and river life. His carvings were crafted primarily in the folk tradition, often made for himself, family, and friends. This sturgeon carving, sourced from his estate in Red Hook, NY, stands as a testament to his artistic vision and love for nature, blending traditional folk craftsmanship with personal storytelling. 74" Long
