About the Item

Bronze elephant with cub Irenée Rochard was a French sculptor and artist known for his bronze sculptures. He was born on July 23, 1906 in Villefranche-sur-Saône, France, and studied at the École nationale supérieure des arts décoratifs in Paris. He began his career as a sculptor in the 1920s. Rochard was known for his elegant, abstract bronze sculptures which he produced in his own foundry. His works were often inspired by nature and animals and were admired for their flowing lines and forms. During World War II, Rochard was a member of the Résistance and helped save Jewish children. After the war, he continued his career as a sculptor and regularly exhibited his works in Paris and other cities. Irenée Rochard died on May 14, 1984 in Paris. His works are today exhibited in many prestigious museums and collections around the world.
