Bronze Model of "Lioness Carrying an Antelope" by Christophe Fratin

About the Item

This fine and powerful bronze sculpture, Lioness Carrying an Antelope, is after the work of renowned French sculptor Christophe Fratin (1801-1864). Sand-cast circa 1880, this striking piece showcases Fratin’s signature style of detailed anatomical precision juxtaposed with impressionistic surface textures. The naturalistic base is signed "FRATIN," highlighting the artist’s craftsmanship. The sculpture is a reduced version of Fratin’s Lioness Feeding Her Cubs, which was presented at the Salon in 1835. This smaller version beautifully complements his right-facing work of a Lioness Carrying an Ostrich. The original larger group was noted by Lami and an example in terracotta is housed at the Musée de Compiègne. Posthumously cast in the late 19th century, this piece is an exceptional example of Fratin’s vigorous impasto technique, with intricate detailing of both the lioness and her prey. The sculpture retains its complex original reddish-brown patina with hints of black, giving it a striking visual depth. The elements are meticulously affixed to the base using peened posts through the underside, ensuring stability and authenticity. Literature & Further Reading: E.
