About the Item

Antique bronze and silver-plated bronze objects, these are memories of an exceptional visit to the most beautiful oceanographic museum in the world, designed and built at the very beginning of the 20th century on Monegasque territory. A hermit crab or "pagure", this strange crustacean which must find a shell at all costs so as not to die completely dried up, is fixed on a wooden plaque featuring a bronze plaque marked "Musée de Monaco" €250 per piece A small spider-crab or "maja", a so-called detritivorous species, eating everything in its path rests on a bronze plaque with a brown patina, signed A.MARTELLI. It is also attached to a wooden plaque depicting a bronze plaque marked "Monaco Museum" 250 each. Built in On the side of the mythical rock of Monaco, the Oceanographic Museum has watched over the oceans for more than a century. Created by Prince Albert I of Monaco, nicknamed "the navigator prince", great-grandfather of HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco, it was designed from the outset as a Palace entirely dedicated to Art and Science. Entirely dedicated to the sea, with laboratories, collections of pieces brought back from its explorations, aquariums of fauna and flora from the Mediterranean seabed and outbuildings. The museum's mission is to develop oceanography and make it known to the public through the historical collections of the Founding Prince, the permanent and temporary exhibitions or the living collections of its aquariums. Moreover it is one of the most imposing buildings of the rock with the palace of Monaco, the only one to be on the side of the cliff and to descend along this cliff to the Mediterranean Sea, 80 m below. The prince-savant declared during the inauguration which took place on March 29, 1910: “Here, gentlemen, you see, the land of Monaco has given rise to a proud and inviolable temple dedicated to the new divinity which reigns over intelligences”.
