Saint-Clement, France ca. 1930 Bibliography: 'Craqueles - Les animaux en céramique 1920-1940' by Patrick Malaureile. 'Craquelés Art Deco' by Alain Hardy and Bruno Giardi. Dimensions: 44.5cm x 12cm (17.52 inches x 4.72 inches) Height: 28cm (11.02 inches) This is the prominent signature of the Saint-Clément manufacture. Charles Lemanceau, a French sculptor and ceramist, is renowned for his crackled faience menagerie in the Art Deco style. Graduating from the School of Applied Arts and the National School of Decorative Arts in 1923, following in the footsteps of Victor Prouvé, he worked for the art workshops of Printemps and for the Saint-Clément earthenware factory. In 1925, he exhibited at the Salon d'Automne alongside the elite: Mallet-Stevens, Le Corbusier, and Henri Matisse. Later, after establishing his workshop in 1928, he dedicated himself to Saint-Clément, notably producing a series of does and elephants
