About the Item

Beautiful green patina bronze of a horse with left foreleg raised on rectangular base with cast signature "BARYE" and inscribed by the founders "F. Barbedienne. Fondeur." The powerful modelling of the animal reflects his strength. Commentary: This is a smaller reproduction of the Cheval Turc n°2 (left foreleg raised) edited by Barye circa 1870, then by Ferdinand Barbedienne and Gustave Leblanc Barbedienne from 1876 to 1925. This model is titled Cheval Turc n°3 in Barbedienne’s catalogues. It is also registered in Barye’s Catalogue Raisonné as Reduction n°4 as Barbedienne did not edited all of them. Antoine-Louis Barye's Cheval Turc is one of the quintessential statements of Romanticism and a definitive image of the horse in Western art. It is one of Barye's great masterpieces. It has origins in the horses of classical sculpture such as the Parthenon Frieze (The Elgin Marbles), and in great Italian renaissance equestrian pieces by sculptors such as Cellini and Verroccio. It has profound resonances with other great 19th century depictions of the horse, such as paintings by Delacroix, Stubbs and Gericault. After Bary’s death, an important sale of watercolors, sculptures, casts and models are dispersed. E. Frémiet J. Jacquemart and Goupil represent F. Barbedienne during this sale. They acquire many watercolours, paintings, plasters and 126 models with their rights of reproduction. The Cheval Turc n°3 model is purchased by Goupil for F. Barbedienne for 1120 francs. F. Barbedienne acquired the most commercial Barye’s models including the Louvre famous: La Guerre, La Paix, La force protégeant le travail, L’Ordre punissant les pervers, Thésé combattant le Minotaure, Thésée combattant le centaure Biénor, and a large number of wild animals. According to Bernard Metman one of the first to be interested in edition bronze sculptures, those realized by Ferdinand Barbedienne between 1876 and 1889 are stamped by a golden "FB." This mention is then strictly reserved to Bary’s artworks edited by Barbedienne’s Manufacture.
