'Listening Stag' by Romantic Author A.L. Barye Produced by Barbedienne in Bronze

About the Item

Patinated bronze sculpture 'Listening Stag' by romantic author and sculptor Antoine-Louis Barye and produced by F. Barbedienne Fondeur By: Antoine-Louis Barye, F. Barbedienne Fondeur Material: bronze, copper, metal Technique: cast, patinated, molded, metalwork, polished Dimensions: 6 in x 2.5 in x 7.5 Date: 19th century, designed in 1938 and cast circa 1880 Style: Romaticism, Realism, Naturalism Place of origin: France Antoine-Louis Barye was a renowned french romantic sculptor. His bronze sculpture 'Listening Stag', first modeled and cast around 1838, depicts an alert stag with finely detailed patination. The piece raises on an oval naturalistic base with integral stepped plinth. Here, both the foundry mark of F. Barbedienne Fondeur and the artist's signature can be found, as well as the date of the original modeling and cast. This work pairs with Barye's Stag with Raised Leg. After the sculptor's death, the Listening Stag model was acquired by Ferdinand Barbedienne and cast into bronze. The eminent french poet and art critic Théophile Gautier once described Antoine-Louis Barye as "The Michelangelo of the Menagerie," a fitting tribute to the sculptor's mastery in capturing the vitality and essence of the animal kingdom. Over the course of his prolific career, Barye sought to represent the fundamental character of animals, from the ferocious to the docile, the exotic to the domesticated.
