Pop Art Cement Sculpture 'Gato con flores' by Argentine Author Edgardo Giménez

About the Item

Pop Art painted cement sculpture 'Gato con flores' by argentine author Edgardo Giménez By: Edgardo Giménez Material: cement, limestone, paint, enamel, clay, acrylic Technique: molded, enameled, painted, hand-painted Dimensions: 7 in x 6 in x 12.5 in Date: mid-20th century, 1965 Style: Pop Art, Mid-Century Modern, Space Age Place of origin: Argentina This vibrant 1965 Pop Art cat sculpture encapsulates the playful and graphic aesthetic of Argentine artist Edgardo Giménez. A leading figure in the avant-garde Di Tella Institute (a non-profit cultural research center in Argentina), Giménez worked across media including set design, graphics and conceptual art. 'Gato con Flores' exemplifies his Mid-Century Modern/Pop Art style in three dimensions. Rendered in concrete and vividly hand-painted, the grinning feline is captured in a seated pose. Giménez uses enamel paint to convey a floral pattern in the cat's fur and facial features in fauvist hues. Dynamic colors and simplified yet expressive forms reflect 1960s aesthetic trends and television visual characteristics aimed at mass culture. Whimsical and accessible, the floral cat emanates Space Age optimistic dreams and utopian futures. It is an accessible icon of Argentine Modernism during an era of cultural change.
