About the Item

English pottery model of a lion, Whieldon-type creamware tortoise-shell glaze, circa 1765-1785 The English pottery model of a seated lion with a Whieldon-type creamware tortoise-shell glaze over an agate & redware body has a hollow interior. The interior with a red clay body and cream. One can speculate that the original intention was to create an agate body but the result was inconsistent and the piece was then dipped in a lead-glaze and sponged to create the Whieldon-type tortoise-shell exterior glaze. Dimensions: 7 3/4 inches high x 6 inches wide x 4 3/4 inches deep Provenance: Carter collection- paper label and collection no. 615; Mrs. Russell S. Carter gave a part of her collection of English pottery to The Metropolitan Museum of Art. "A keen and discriminating collector, Mrs. Carter has succeeded in "bagging" a surprising number of exceptional pieces. Many of these were shown in important exhibitions in England in the past and were prized items in such well-known English collections as the Lomax, Sheldon, Clements, Griffith, Elliot, and Revelstoke. The Carter collection of one hundred and eighty pieces spans a wide range." Brooke collection, #54- paper label. Reference: English Pottery: The Burnap Collection- The Frank P. and Harriot C. Burnap Collection of English Pottery in the William Rockhill Nelson Gallery of Art, 1953, Page 63, #311, formerly the M.L. Clarke Collection (Toronto), Brooke Collection (Ref B 856).
