Cat umbrella stand, Orchies manufacture, North of France Barbotine Second half of the 19th century This zoomorphic umbrella stand plays with the trompe-l'oeil by adopting the shape of a cat: the care given to the figuration of the animal contrasts with the purely utilitarian aspect of the object. Magnified by a slip glaze, the red and white cat sits on its hind legs, which are delimited by the base. He wears a small pink scarf around his neck: it is used to carry a fictitious container; in order to receive the umbrellas. The light blue glaze on the inside of the object is reminiscent of Minton's majolica produced in England at the same time. Domestic in appearance, this cat is a perfect match for the bourgeois interiors for which it is intended. This type of fancy piece, made in slip and with a large print run, is particularly popular. The two brothers L'Herminé Declercq, Emile and Joseph, set up a faience factory in Orchies (Flanders) in 1886. Towards the end of the 19th century, the company became known for the production of about twenty humorous decanters decorated with animals, breathing more lightness into tasty retail pieces. The influence of the arts and popular tradition in French decorative arts around the second half of the 19th century is proven. Indeed, this type of small pieces is particularly popular in bourgeois interiors: social and cultural life (calendar rites and festivals, folklore, etc.) and the material culture of the rural world (agriculture, crafts, furniture, etc.) are becoming more and more interesting. It is a new iconographic source for artists. Everyday objects such as jugs; salt shakers and umbrella stands then become pretexts for the most imaginative innovations. H : 71 cm - W: 25 cm
