French large Bronze of a Lion after Claude Michel Clodion, 19th century
About the Item
Very fine and large bronze of a reclining lion. Many details, such as the treatment of the lion’s mane demonstrate the sculptor’s mastery skill, as well as an understanding of the anatomy of this great beast. Wooden plinth with mahogany veneer, size of the plinth is: 50 cm x 26 cm (19.7 x 10.2 inch). The present bronze is a rare model of Clodion; despite a known terracotta model, no further casts of this lion bronze are known. This is a very attractive sculpture with an impressive presence.
Claude Michel (1738 – 1814), known as Clodion, was a French sculptor in the Rococo and Louis Seize style. Noted for his versatility as an artist and for the lively charm of his figures, which included Grecian nymphs, cherubs, and gods, Clodion was both popular and celebrated in his day working in marble, bronze, & terracotta. Born in 1738 in Nancy, France into a family of artists, Clodion came under the tutelage of his uncle in 1755 and worked assisting him in his sculpture workshop. He quickly achieved his own professional success, receiving the grand prize for sculpture at the Académie Royale just four years later. In 1761 he earned the first silver medal for studies from models. In 1762 he went to Rome, where his activity was considerable between 1767 and 1771.Perhaps best known for his small-scale terracotta sculptures, Clodion was collected by an international clientele and counted Catherine II among his admirers. At the height of his fame, he also sculpted the relief on the Arc de Triomphe du Carrousel in Munich. The artist eventually fell out with Parisian society after he was denied admission into the Académie Royale, and the oncoming French Revolution chased him for a time back to Nancy. Clodion died on March 29, 1814 in Paris, France.

Pair of Bronze Figurines after Michel Clodion
By Claude Michel Clodion
Located in LA CIOTAT, FR
A delightful pair of patinated bronze statuettes, originally candelabra, after Clodion (Claude Michel Clodion 1738 – 1814), depicting a young satyr and satyress. Mounted on truncated columns of fluted white marble, and marked with the Clodion signature (of questionable authenticity) these figurines now show no trace of the original candelabra screw fixtures. The original models for these figurines are attributed to Clodion (for the young satyr) and to Louis Felix de la Rue...
