Gilt & Patinated Bronze Models of the Marly Horses After Guillaume Coustou

About the Item

This magnificent pair of gilt and patinated bronze sculptures faithfully reproduces the iconic Marly Horses, originally sculpted in marble by Guillaume Coustou (1677–1746) for the Château de Marly and now housed in the Louvre Museum, Paris. These celebrated works epitomize neoclassical grandeur, capturing the raw energy and tension between semi-clad classical male attendants and their rearing stallions. Exquisitely cast in gilt bronze, these models rest on naturalistic bases, enhancing their lifelike dynamism. The detailing is remarkable, from the powerful musculature of the horses to the gracefully contoured figures of the attendants, reflecting the artistic mastery of Coustou’s original vision. Each piece bears the artist’s signature, ‘Coustou,’ inscribed on the underside, affirming their historical tribute. Standing approximately 19.5 inches in height and 17.5 inches in width, these striking sculptures make an imposing decorative statement, ideal for collectors and connoisseurs of neoclassical art. Whether displayed as a centerpiece or flanking an entryway, this pair embodies timeless elegance, strength, and movement, making them an exquisite addition to any distinguished collection.
