'Gladiator' a standing bronze racehorse by Pierre Lenordez (1814-1892). Signed to the base and inscribed 'Gladiateur né en 1862. Par Monarque et Miss Gladiator. Gagnant en 1864 du Clearwell à Newmarket, en 1865 des 2000 guinées du Derby d'Epsom, du Grand Prix de Paris...'. Excellent brown patination.

Pierre Lenordez (1814–1892) was a celebrated French sculptor and animalier, renowned for his remarkable ability to capture the essence and vitality of animals in his works. Born in Saint-Lô, Normandy, Lenordez initially trained as a painter before transitioning to sculpture, where he found his true calling. His artistic journey was deeply influenced by the rural landscapes of his homeland, which provided ample inspiration for his realistic and dynamic portrayals of horses, livestock, and other animals.
Lenordez exhibited regularly at the Paris Salon during the mid-19th century, earning widespread acclaim for his bronze sculptures. His works, often cast by prominent foundries of the era, reflected a blend of anatomical precision and expressive movement, qualities that distinguished him among his contemporaries.
Pierre Lenordez
Born in 1815 in Vaast, in the district of Manche, Lenordez settled in Caen where he built his reputation as an Animalier sculptor. He is particularly known for his accomplished models of horses. His style, similar to that of the racing paintings produced in the early nineteenth century is very recognisable. Notably the shape of the head, thin nose, flared nostrils and alert eyes. He joined many horse racing groups and received commissions for portraits of known horses. Thus, his sculptures represented real sporting horses, winners of important races in the equestrian calendar or horses who had strong blood lines and were responsible for siring a succession of outstanding winners. Indeed, many of his sculptures have plaques giving details of the name of the horse, the race it had won, the year and sometimes even the lineage.

The artist enjoyed a prestigious career. According to the Benezit, Baucke studied under Karl Janssen at the Dusseldorf Academy of Fine Arts. In 1903 Baucke moved to Berlin and executed several commissions for Kaiser Wilhelm II including a major work at the Royal Palace in Berlin (known since the end of the monarchy in 1918 as the Berlin Palace) and supervision of the development of the Schlossplatz palace square. Commissions included the Monument to William I at Rotthausen, the bronze of King Friedrich Wilhelm III of Prussia at the town hall in Elberfeld, a statue of King Frederick I, a stone statue of Maurice of Nassau and marble busts of Helmuth von Moltke, Chief of the German General Staff, and German Chancellor, Otto von Bismarck...
