About the Item

This remarkable horse sculpture depicts a head and shoulders study of a wild stallion and mare carved meticulously from figured and veined natural marble stone with colours ranging from terracotta, pale pink, orange, cream and brown. The artist has cleverly used the naturally formed crystals from within the stone to produce the windswept manes of these two handsome horses. The carving shows great skill with fine detailing to the mouth, muscular and veined faces with well defined ears and bright black eyes inlaid with a different marble which matches the stone used in the double stepped and moulded oval plinth. This interesting and rare sculpture bears the artist's initials carved into the reverse side C.A. Italian, circa 1930 Height 17cm x width 13cm x depth 9cm

A carved soapstone Raj period Indian study of elephants and two Maharajas C1910
Located in Central England, GB
A fine Indian Raj period carved soapstone study of a large elephant carrying two Maharajas and their guide seated high on its back in an elaborate carriage surrounded by a group of young elephants. This superb carving shows great skill from the highly proficient craftsman who has deeply carved and pierced the study with three dimensional detailing. And just to make his work more difficult the body of the large elephant is hollow carved and pierced with a small perfectly carved study of another elephant at its centre which is incredibly difficult to achieve working through the tight delicately carved and pierced scrolls which form its body. Indian, circa 1910 Height 21cm x width 11cm x depth 9cm Thank you for looking at this unusual hand carved soapstone elephant...

19th Century Carved Oak Study of St. Paul the Apostle, English, circa 1860
Located in Central England, GB
This remarkable and very finely carved study of the biblical figure of St Paul, The Apostle who was originally Saul of Tarsus born BCE. Tarsus in Cilicia (now in Turkey). He died circa 62 – 64 CE in Rome, Italy. He was one of the leaders of the first generation Christians and was often considered to be the most important person after Jesus in the history of Christianity. This highly accomplished wood carving is a difficult material for detailing English oak. It shows him standing barefoot and dressed in simple robes with a sword in one hand and a scroll in the other. His face has been well captured with a good expression, detailed hair and a long beard. The small scale of this figure would indicate it was not originally church decoration...
