Life-Size Painted Terra Cotta Sculpture of a Large Hound, Austria, Circa 1880

About the Item

Originally from Austria, circa 1880, this life-sized painted terra cotta sculpture depicts a large and regal pinscher. The seated dog has been hand-painted black, with light traces of the original orange terra cotta color showing. A bejeweled collar hangs loosely around the dog’s neck, adding details to the realistic skeletal and muscular composition of the athletic dog. Austrian pinschers are rugged farm dogs, bred to be livestock guardians. Slightly heavier than their German ancestors, Austrian pinschers are known for their pear-shaped heads and alert visage, both very accurately depicted by this sculpture. In the tradition of 19th century Austrian painted terra cotta and bronzes, which most often depicted dogs, this is an unusual sculpture with an impressive stature and proportions. Our painted terra cotta of an Austrian hound is a must-have for any dog or animal lover. It can be displayed on the floor in a living room or den, but to give it additional presence, it can be placed on a pedestal or center table in an entryway or foyer.
