About the Item
This lovely mid-century sculpture done by Bijan Bahar features 5 seagulls that appear to be flying wing to wing. It is a tall and fine example of the types of sculptures that earned Bijan the nickname, "the father of metal sculpture". It is very similar in style to works by Curtis Jere.
The seagulls appear to be done in cast iron. They are mounted to a stone base that looks like onyx.
The piece is 36"H x 14"W (at the widest point) x 5"D. The base is approximately 10"W x 5"D x 4.5"H. It is impressive in size.
Bijan Bahar (1936-2016) was a major force in the mid-century metal art movement and considered by many to be "The Father of Metal Sculpture". This piece is a fine example of his work.
He was born in Iran. At the age of fifteen he traveled to Europe before eventually making his way to New York. He studied art at The California College of Arts and Crafts. He began sculpting in metals but eventually found inspiration is acrylics. His sculptures can be found in the National Air and Space Museum at tile Smithsonian Institute, the Baccarat Museum of Paris and the Newport Harbor Art Museum.
